Robert Hearn was born in 1880 in Great Wilbraham (Chesterton Q1-1881 3B:473), son of George and Elizabeth Anne HEARN(née PRIOR).

1881 census...Aged 3 months, he was "by the Chapel", Great Wilbraham, with his father George HEARN [35] farm Labourer born Battisford, Suffolk; his mother Elizabeth A [36] born Walpole Highway, Norfolk; sisters Francis E [5], Sarah M [4] and Mary E [2], all born in Great Wilbraham.

1891 census...Aged 10, he was still by the Chapel in Great Wilbraham with his parents, sister Elizabeth (Mary E) and sisters Bertha [9], Kate [7] and Emily [7 mnths] and brother Henry [5]. The new siblings were all born in Great Wilbraham.

1901 census...Aged 20, a domestic groom for Eleanor CALDWELL, he was at 3 Audley Square, St George Hanover Square, London. His parents were at Angle End, Great Wilbraham with his sister Emily

1911 census...He has not been found in this census, possibly he was in the Army. His parents were at Angle End, Great Wilbraham with is sister Emily, they were Later at Chapel House, Great Wilbraham. All eight children survived.

Chesterton Q3-1914 3B:1073, he married Margaret Annie BRIGINSHAW (b.2-10-1884) later of 66 Dumfries Street, Luton. The pension card has her address as Upwell Rectory, near Wisbech.

He enlisted in Cambridge. It should read "Army Service Corps" since the Royal prefix was not granted until 20th December 1918. His medal index card is confusing. It seems initially he was awarded only the Victory medal. This was actually impossible and the card is amended to show War medal only. The reason for failing to qualify for the Victory Medal are not shown and as his Army records are not available we are unlikely to ever know. Presumably he served less than 28 days in that theatre of war.

The pension card says he died from appendicitis. Basra was used for concentration of graves from many parts of what is now Iraq. There is now a plaque for all whose graves cannot be found or maintained.

Robert Hearn is buried in Basra War Cemetery, Iraq, grave 1:S:16
also commemorated on the Roll of Honour in St Nicholas Church, Great Wilbraham.
